Rare earth market update on September 17, 2025
The overall performance of the domestic rare earth market remains weak, primarily reflected in a price correction for praseodymium-neodymium, limited downstream demand, and insufficient motivation among suppliers to raise prices. Today, the prices of praseodymium-neodymium oxide and gadolinium oxide have decreased to approximately 580,000 yuan per ton and 173,000 yuan per ton, respectively.
From the supply perspective, influenced by strong environmental crackdowns, frequent extreme weather, and high energy prices, the capacity release speed of many rare earth mining and smelting enterprises remains moderate. Additionally, with limited imports of overseas rare earth products, the growth of spot supply in the market is relatively slow. From the demand perspective, short-term market demand falls short of expectations; however, as it is currently the traditional consumption peak season and rare earth prices remain relatively low, downstream users’ enthusiasm for inquiries and purchases remains acceptable. In the long term, with the deepening implementation of the "carbon neutrality" strategy, the demand for high-end magnetic materials in new energy vehicles, wind power generation, and energy-saving motors is expected to increase. Simultaneously, the steady recovery of traditional manufacturing demand and the rapid development of humanoid robot applications provide multiple favorable factors that strongly support the growth of rare earth demand.
In terms of news, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, in August, domestic sales of new energy vehicles reached 1.171 million units, increased by 13% month-on-month and increased by 18.3% year-on-year. Among these, domestic sales of new energy passenger vehicles reached 1.106 million units, increased by 13.4% month-on-month and increased by 16.5% year-on-year; domestic sales of new energy commercial vehicles reached 66,000 units, increased by 6.3% month-on-month and increased by 58.6% year-on-year. From January to August, domestic sales of new energy vehicles reached 8.088 million units, increased by 30.1% year-on-year. Among these, domestic sales of new energy passenger vehicles reached 7.607 million units, increased by 28.6% year-on-year; domestic sales of new energy commercial vehicles reached 481,000 units, increased by 59% year-on-year.
