Rare earth market update on September 16, 2025
Domestic rare earth prices are locally stable with some minor increases, with praseodymium-neodymium oxide, praseodymium-neodymium metal, and neodymium-iron-boron scrap (praseodymium-neodymium) prices increasing by approximately 10,000 yuan per ton, 5,000 yuan per ton, and 11 yuan per kilogram, respectively. Currently, the release of downstream demand and the rebound momentum of praseodymium-neodymium prices have become key focal points for market participants.
In the light rare earth market, influenced by the significant price declines of the past one to two weeks and the current relatively low price levels, downstream users have shown increased enthusiasm for restocking at lower prices. Additionally, with the ongoing "Golden September and Silver October" consumption peak season, suppliers’ confidence in raising prices has strengthened. In the medium-heavy rare earth market, trading activity remains low. On one hand, downstream enterprises have largely completed their phased procurement plans, resulting in limited demand in recent days; on the other hand, the current market’s relatively ample spot supply has, to some extent, suppressed demand-side performance. However, supported by production costs, suppliers generally exhibit low willingness to reduce prices.
In terms of news, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, in August, automobile production and sales reached 2.815 million units and 2.857 million units, respectively, increased by 8.7% and 10.1% month-on-month, and increased by 13.0% and 16.4% year-on-year; among these, new energy vehicle production and sales reached 1.391 million units and 1.395 million units, respectively, increased by 11.9% and 10.5% month-on-month, and increased by 27.4% and 26.8% year-on-year, with new energy vehicle sales accounting for 48.8% of total new vehicle sales. From January to August, cumulative automobile production and sales reached 21.051 million units and 21.128 million units, respectively, increased by 12.7% and 12.6% year-on-year; among these, new energy vehicle production and sales reached 9.625 million units and 9.62 million units, respectively, increased by 37.3% and 36.7% year-on-year, with new energy vehicle sales accounting for 45.5% of total new vehicle sales.
