Molybdenum market update on June 19, 2025
Domestic molybdenum prices are caught in a challenging stalemate, with strong supplier reluctance to sell at lower prices clashing with limited buyer consumption capacity, resulting in a stagnant trading atmosphere and modest new order volumes. However, over the long term, many industry players remain optimistic about a positive market outlook.
On the bullish side, the tight supply of raw materials and high production costs make price reductions difficult for raw material suppliers, with some tentatively raising molybdenum concentrate quotes to around 3,890 yuan/ton-degree. Additionally, robust growth in emerging industries has fueled strong demand for molybdenum-containing stainless steel, supporting a firm ferromolybdenum market. As of now, the total ferromolybdenum tender volume for June stands at approximately 8,000 tons.
On the bearish side, previous high molybdenum prices and tight liquidity among downstream producers have reduced market inquiries compared to earlier periods. Furthermore, the lukewarm international molybdenum market provides limited impetus for domestic price increases. According to CTIA GROUP LTD, the recent rise in molybdenum powder prices and tight market supply have prompted molybdenum product companies to issue successive price increase notices for molybdenum bars, wires, and silicon-molybdenum rods since June.
In related news, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, in May 2025, the mining industry’s added value increased by 5.7%, manufacturing grew by 6.2%, and the electricity, heat, gas, and water production and supply sector increased by 2.2%. Among 41 major industry categories, 35 saw their added value increase year-on-year; specifically, the chemical raw materials and products manufacturing sector increased by 5.9%, non-metallic mineral products industry decreased by 0.6%, ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry increased by 4.8%, non-ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry increased by 8.1%, general equipment manufacturing increased by 6.3%, automotive manufacturing increased by 11.6%, railway, shipbuilding, aerospace, and other transport equipment manufacturing increased by 14.6%, and electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing increased by 11.0%.
