Molybdenum market update on April 25, 2025
This week, the domestic molybdenum market in China maintained an overall upward trend. In addition to price increases for many molybdenum products, both trader participation and actual transaction volumes improved. Positive factors include: first, significant price declines in the previous one to two weeks heightened suppliers' profit awareness; second, with stable steel prices this week, relatively low ferromolybdenum prices, and the approaching May Day holiday, steel companies were more active in tendering for ferromolybdenum and slightly raised their bids. Negative factors include: first, as molybdenum prices continued to rise recently, downstream and end customers became increasingly cautious due to fear of high prices; second, the lackluster international molybdenum market hindered the warming of the domestic market.
According to CTIA GROUP LTD, this week's price changes are as follows: molybdenum concentrate prices rose by approximately 90 yuan/ton-degree, a 2.76% increase; ferromolybdenum prices increased by about 7,000 yuan/ton, a 3.33% rise; sodium molybdate prices went up by around 2,000 yuan/ton, a 1.30% increase; ammonium heptamolybdate prices rose by about 2,000 yuan/ton, a 0.93% increase; molybdenum powder prices increased by approximately 7 yuan/kg, a 1.76% rise; and molybdenum oxide prices went up by about 60 yuan/ton-degree, a 1.78% increase.
Data from the World Steel Association shows that in March 2025, global crude steel production across 69 countries included in the statistics reached 166.1 million tons, a 2.9% year-on-year increase. Specifically: China’s crude steel production was 92.84 million tons, up 4.6% year-on-year; India’s production was 13.8 million tons, up 7.0%; Japan’s production was 7.2 million tons, up 0.2%; the U.S. produced 6.7 million tons, down 1.5%; Russia’s estimated production was 6.2 million tons, down 3.2%; and South Korea’s production was 5 million tons, down 5.3%.
