Molybdenum market update on April 11, 2025
This week, the domestic molybdenum market in China displayed a trend of initial stability followed by a decline. At the start of the week, factors such as stable steel procurement volumes and prices, moderate growth in spot supply, and robust production cost support prompted suppliers to maintain steady quotations. However, as the weekend approached, the escalation of the tariff war hindered steel exports, leading to an increase in domestic steel spot inventories and a subsequent decline in steel prices. As ferromolybdenum is a key additive in steel production, its price also retreated, impacting participants' sentiment toward the broader molybdenum market.
According to CTIA GROUP LTD, this week's price movements included: molybdenum concentrate prices fell by approximately 20 yuan/ton-degree, a decrease of 0.59%; ferromolybdenum prices dropped by about 3,000 yuan/ton, a decline of 1.35%; molybdenum oxide prices decreased by around 20 yuan/ton-degree, a drop of 0.59%; while prices for other molybdenum chemical products and derivatives showed no significant changes.
According to the Baotou Industry and Information Technology Bureau, among the 14 steel-related products closely monitored in Baotou City, three recorded month-on-month price increases, while 11 saw declines. High-carbon ferrochrome experienced the largest drop, with an average price of 7,100 yuan/ton, down 300 yuan/ton month-on-month, a decline of 4.1%. On a year-on-year basis, one product saw a price increase, while 13 declined. Cold-rolled coil (2mm×1250) recorded the steepest year-on-year drop, with an average price of 3,969 yuan/ton, down 656 yuan/ton, a decrease of 14.2%; seamless pipe had the smallest year-on-year decline, with an average price of 4,151 yuan/ton, down 374 yuan/ton, a drop of 8.3%.
