Rare earth market update on January 6, 2026
The domestic rare earth market overall maintained sideways consolidation, with praseodymium-neodymium-dysprosium-terbium prices fluctuating within a narrow range amid no major news releases in the market and relatively balanced supply-demand relationship, as well as quiet buying and selling atmosphere in the market. Today, praseodymium-neodymium oxide and praseodymium-neodymium metal prices increased by approximately RMB 2,000/ton and RMB 5,000/ton respectively, while gadolinium oxide and holmium oxide prices consolidated around RMB 161,000/ton and RMB 494,000/ton respectively.
From the supply side, first, against the background of low downstream inquiries and high production difficulty, some rare earth mining and smelting enterprises have slowed the pace of capacity release; second, due to high geopolitical risks and limited overseas rare earth product supply, China's rare earth product imports remained low. From the demand side, first, high proportion of long-term agreement orders, limited market liquidity, and general expectations among industry players for the future market have led to cautious consumption among buyers, with few spot transactions; second, with the approaching Spring Festival holiday, combined with rapid development of emerging industries, short-term downstream demand is expected to increase.
On the news front, according to Baotou Evening News, from January to November 2025, fixed asset investment in Baotou City increased by 6.1% year-on-year, respectively higher than the national level (-2.6%) and autonomous region level (3.5%) by 8.7 and 2.6 percentage points. Among them, industrial investment increased by 12.5% year-on-year, higher than total investment by 6.4 percentage points, driving total investment growth by 9.4 percentage points. Wind power industry and hydrogen energy storage industry investment increased by 1.2 times and 1.8 times year-on-year respectively, driving total investment growth by 6.4 and 4.5 percentage points respectively.
