Tungsten bronze is a type of non-stoichiometric compound with formula of MxWO3, where M is usually alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium ion and rare earth metal ion, etc; and 0< x< 1. The change in the types of M and the value of x make MxWO3 having conductor or semiconductor properties.
Tungsten Bronze Properties
1. Usually cubic crystal or tetragonal crystal.
2. Color varies with the change of x value, from golden yellow to light blue gray.
3. All tungsten bronzes are extremely inert, semi-metallic, metallic and conductive. Their chemical inertness is expressed in the following characteristics:
(1) Insoluble in water;
(2) Resistant to all acids except hydrofluoric acid (HF).
However, they can reduce silver nitrate from its ammonia solution to silver. And they can be oxidized to tungstate (VI) in the presence of alkali.
Tungsten Bronze Applications
1. Be used as a catalyst in the oxidation reaction of carbon monoxide.
2. Be applied as a degasifier in fuel cells.
